NFT NYC - A step for NFTs; A huge leap still required for Women in Web3?

How IRL Fashion Brands can Take the Leap into the World of NFT Wearables, DiamondHandBag Panel.

It feels like just yesterday we were strolling down Madison Avenue but now sadly, we’re firmly back on home soil. Although we’re one of the many teams to have been struck by COVID, today we’re taking the opportunity to reflect on how awesome it was to hangout with so many virtual friends for NFT.NYC IRL (despite falling ill), and we want to shout out some of our major highlights from the event. 

TLDR: NFT NYC the conference has room for improvement but the DHB team loved every second meeting with key voices in the space and receiving a unanimous sentiment that the Diamond Handag Genesis drop is going to be huge!

Day 1: New Yorker Initiation with the GossApe Girls 

Without wanting to dive into a “Hey Upper Eastsiders” style blog post (but secretly totally wanting to elude to all things GG, SATC and NYC), we began our trip with none other than our friends at GossApe Girl. Following our partnership for Metaverse Fashion Week, the team showed us around some of their favourite spots having been NYC natives since graduating NYU. We hit up the super stylish rooftop venue at Dear Irving on Hudson and sat on the sidewalk at 3am comparing Adel’s Famous vs. The Halal Guys in true New Yorker fashion!

Day 2: Bags and Brunch

Of course, it wouldn’t have been a trip to NYC without assigning a whole specific day to shopping. But first, working up our appetite for all the stores, we caught up with Metaverse Momma Christina Nguyen and her daughter Madilyne Nguyen-Acosta. In true New York fashion, we were overheard by two amazing women who were brunching, as they listened to our Founder’s story as a reseller of luxury handbags, pulled out her Kelly bag and asked when she could get our black dragon handle bag.

Of course this sparked a New York Minute moment, and we shared the DiamondHandBag project and had our first “Web2.5” breakthrough. Everyone at the table was swooning over our artwork, and in a proud moment for the team, we knew we were speaking the right language for womxn wanting to enter the wonderful world of Web3.

Next, we hit EVERY đź‘ŹSINGLE đź‘ŹSTOREđź‘Ź on Madison including some of our brand obsessions including Alexander McQueen, Prada, Bottega Veneta, Burberry, Louis Vuitton, Chloe, and of course Chanel! However (shockingly out of character) our Founder Angel Pui purchased only one bag (The green Bottega Veneta). But hey, there’s a first time for everything, right? 

Day 3 - NFT NYC - waiting, lines, more waiting and Dudes, many many dudes

Feeling well and truly settled into NYC, conference day approached and like you may have read (literally all over the internet) we spent *hours* in the line just to get our VIP badge. 

Let us be clear, we are incredibly grateful for the NFT.NYC hosting such an iconic gathering of like-minded industry people but the level of disorganization and chaos simply felt unnecessary. Next year, we hope that the team decides to scale down in some capacity. There was a general consensus of an event that was “over promised and under delivered.” 

Another criticism of the conference itself was how overwhelmingly male it seemed to be. The same was not true at so many other side events taking place, and it felt disappointing that this particular piece of news hit the soundwaves so loudly for those not in attendance. Our mission at DiamondHandbag.Club is clear - we want to support and uplift all diverse voices in Web3 and facilitate the onboarding of women and girls to enable financial freedom!


Having noted these criticisms, one major highlight of the conference was catching up with some industry heavy weights especially during the NFT NYC VIP Dinner, including our friends Tessa from Bulls and Apes as well as Barbora from JEVELS. Not to mention all the awesome satellite events which took place including We Are Web3 hosted by Meta Angels - check out our highlights.

Day 4 - Angel’s Quick Fire Thinking

Angel stepped in as a skillful moderator/speaker hybrid.

Ahead of arriving in NYC, we were definitely most excited about our panel, however, the course of event planning never runs smoothly and that was certainly the case for our panel discussion - How IRL Fashion Brands can Take the Leap into the World of NFT Wearables, DiamondHandBag Panel.  After much scrambling, we were informed there would be no moderator - so, ever the hero (!), Angel stepped in to deliver the most epic and skillful moderator/speaker hybrid you have ever seen #SWOON. We were joined on stage by Indre Viltrakyte, CEO and Founder of The Rebels NFT, Chad Knight, Head of Cyberwear at Wilder World, Nikita Rotanov CTO at ARTISANT and Eshita Nandini, Crypto Asset Research Analyst at Messari. Once again there was much love from both the panel and the audience for DHB and despite the initial chaos - the panel was defo one for the books!

Shaking off some of the adrenaline, we met up with our friends and DHB advisors from Big Head Club, Dapper Labs and Stoner Cats teams for some well deserved drinks before making our way to the Doodles event! After the epic delivery at SXSW this year, everyone was expecting something big from the team - and boy, did they deliver! From announcing Pharell Williams as Chief Brand Officer to Doodles 2, the key takeaway for us was their mission to onboard a million people in NFTs! 

We are all for the approach in that this onboarding will take place via some kind of music game.  Between gaming, music, and fashion NFTs, Web3 is set for mainstream adoption and we’re here for it!

Day 5 - Work Meetings don’t feel like meetings when you’re in Web3 💯

Of course, we were especially thrilled to share the Diamond Handbag Club project Genesis launch with everyone attending NFT NYC, but we also managed to squeeze in some time with some iconic NYC fashionistas including style guru, socialite and DHB friend, Olivia Palermo. Her goals firmly aligned with everything DHB stands for and also explained how she has always dreamed of being able to create her own bags one day 🤔

We also had the opportunity to meet with Futurist & Producer Seth Blaustein at Dollar Donation Club which is transforming the way people donate to social impact projects  through micro donation subscriptions. Seth also launched the Whalez NFT with the first 50 NFTs selling for over $8M!

 

To close out the day, we attended KIKIs Web3 Party. We love Swickie’s story of taking a chance on the web3 world and becoming a digital asset momager / entrepreneur in the space, launching a fragrance inspired by her Ape NFT - KIKI. This is exactly what we would love to see replicated more for womxn, truly embracing Web3 projects with their own personal brand and why not accessorize your branded PFP with a DiamondHandBag 💎👜

Day 6 - No rest for the wicked - Angel Sleeps No More 

On the penultimate day of the event, we joined the one and only Paramount for a lunch meeting ahead of meeting with our agents WME for their Web3 Happy Hour.  Other meetings included an introduction to Animoca Brands whose mission is to advance digital property rights and contribute to building the open metaverse and Recur whose goal is to make NFTs accessible for fans and brands with seamless, easy-to-use, and secure experiences.

Angel closed out the evening by heading to her first ever Sleep No More experience! If you want to cry from as much laughter as the team did when hearing about this experience - please drop us a dm! We’d be happy to share details about the NSFW environment poor Angel found herself in! 

Day 7 - The Grand Finale

Wrapping up our time in NYC, we joined the Mavion x Minkoff event and GIRL! The DHB team was incredibly impressed with the overall sentiment of the Mavion project. It left us all BUZZING and wanting for more from the entire space! 

The Mavion project boasts physical fashion, digital assets, and royalties for holders and the key takeaway for us was that the team is  actively wanting women to gain  financial freedom through Web3. From being insanely inspired to being incredibly humbled, it was a major highlight to close the day with so much love for the DHB Genesis drop. Mavion loved our artwork so much they wanted to use it in their project. 

So to summarize; from women over hearing about us at Brunch and loving the project (even as web3 outsiders), to major projects in the space buzzing over what we are doing and even our mentors/masters/teachers in Web3 giving us their support -  the future for DiamondHandBag’s Gensis Drop feels so bright.
