Phygital: How Technology is Rewriting the Rules of Fashion

Another season, another New York Fashion Week. But, what’s truly innovative this season beyond some iconic trends including bright neons, underwear as outerwear and Y2K flashbacks? That’s right, this season fashion is embracing the phygital.

From NFT access shows and digital twins to AR and decentralized runways, fashion is embracing the ever merging digital and physical worlds.

Let’s dive into some of NYFW Fall 2022 phygital highlights.

Tommy Hilfiger: a Metaverse Fashion Pioneer Brand

Tommy Hilfiger

It would be criminal not to start off by obsessing over Tommy Hilfiger’s show. Of course, Mr. Tommy Hilfiger is no stranger to the metaverse and sat down with our very own Victoria Gimigliano during Metaverse Fashion Week earlier in the year. The show was a spectacular example of how to merge worlds.

The community was aware that the Tommy Hilfiger team would be blurring the line between the physical and the digital by broadcasting the show into Roblox. Not only that but, Roblox users were also able to purchase digital and physical exclusives.

By turning the catwalk an “experiential runway,” Mr Hilfiger explained that the show is where fashion, art, music, and entertainment come together to engage with cutting edge communities. Their team is building new creative experiences.

Not only are physical fashion brands embracing the digital but the same can be said for digital first brands, such as Zero10, where digital fashion carves its space within mainstream fashion weeks.

Zero 10 CEO, George Yashin said to Forbes earlier this week:

“Digital fashion doesn’t need to be limited to web 3.0 and only exist virtually but, to live outside of it—on people, around us, in public, in social media, and in concept spaces,”

Chain Guardian Digital Twins

We also loved to see ChainGuardians showcasing a new limited-edition line of "digital twin" clothing, featuring virtual immersion technology. This will allow visitors to wear the clothing in the real world and on an avatar in the Metaverse, as well as experience the vast array of NFT utilities and experiences each item of clothing offers.

Decentralized Runway Show

Kim Shui Show at NYFW

Another highlight from the week came from New York City womenswear designer, Kim Shui. Partnering with Afterpay, Shui developed the first-ever crowdsourced runway garment with fabric created from pixel submissions. The garment made its way down the runway on September 12 and was then minted into its own NFT to those who contributed a pixel to the final garment’s design.

The rules of fashion are constantly being rewritten but for the first time in a long time, something revolutionary feels as though it’s on the horizon, and we at DiamondHandbag Club are totally here for it.
